Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to receive the benefit from an approved claim?

It can take as little as 2 weeks to receive the payout from a policy. However, it all depends on the details of the claim and whether additional information, documents or steps were requested during the claim review process. With regards to Term Life Insurance, the claim review and approval process may take longer if the policyholder passed away within the first two years of their policy.

Who is responsible for paying my claim?

Blue Cross Life will take care of reviewing all the paperwork and paying out approved claims.

How is the benefit paid?

Once a claim is approved, the people entitled to the benefit (i.e. the beneficiaries for a Term Life Insurance policy or the policyholder for a Critical Illness Insurance policy) will receive a payment.

Does my policy have any exclusions?

In Canada, all Term Life Insurance policies include a standard suicide clause. This clause indicates that the death benefit will not be paid out if the policyholder passes away from suicide in the first 2 years of the policy being active.

Critical Illness Insurance policies also have their own industry standard exclusions. You can learn more about them by reading a sample policy.

In some cases, additional exclusions are added to a customer’s policy which all depend on the customer’s personal lifestyle or health situation. This is rare, but it could happen if, for example, they have a high-risk job or hobbies. Because of this, we always recommend that our customers read the sections about exclusions in their contracts carefully.

Can you still help me if I don’t know the details of my loved one’s policy?

We're dedicated to safeguarding our customers’ privacy, which is why we'll need to first confirm your identity as the policyholder, Executor, or personal representative first. Once that's done, we can walk you through the policy details.

For Term Life Insurance policies, we always suggest keeping your beneficiaries informed about your policy details in case of unforeseen circumstances.
