Do I need Term Life Insurance?

Most people choose to buy Life Insurance when they experience a significant life event, such as getting married, welcoming a new child, or purchasing a home. If you have someone depending on you financially - getting Life Insurance is a smart move. The money you could leave behind will help reduce the financial stress if you were to unexpectedly pass away.

Why should you consider life insurance?

It depends on your financial situation. Term Life Insurance helps you secure your loved ones’ future for a certain amount of time, for example, 10 to 30 years.

Term Life Insurance is a smart move if you have dependents or large debts to pay, such as a mortgage. One advantage is that the monthly payments for Term Life Insurance are often significantly lower than other types of Life Insurance in Canada (e.g. whole or universal life insurance).

Regardless of your investments and savings, life insurance provides a different level of protection by providing a lump-sum payment during critical times.

How much does Term Life Insurance cost?

Life insurance coverage is more affordable than you might think. For a cost similar to your monthly cell phone bill, you can ensure financial stability for you and your loved ones. The cost of your monthly premium is determined by a variety of factors including your age, gender, smoking status and medical history.

Is my Blue Cross Life Insurance plan fully underwritten?

Yes! Underwriting is the process of life insurance providers in Canada learning more about you, your lifestyle, and your financial situation, to assess the risk and offer the best available coverage, terms, and monthly payment based on your needs.

Will my rate increase if my health worsens?

No. Regardless of your health condition, once you buy a term life insurance policy in Canada, your rates won't change throughout the term of your policy. You'll pay the same amount every month for your selected term.

What is a death benefit?

The death benefit is a one time lump-sum, tax-free payment your loved ones receive if you were to pass away. The total amount of the death benefit is the total amount of coverage you picked when you purchased your policy. For example, if you buy a $500,000 Life Insurance policy, the death benefit is $500,000.

What happens if I pass away during my policy term?

Your loved ones will be supported by a dedicated Claims Concierge through the claims process. This person will be their go-to contact to walk them through the process which usually takes a couple of weeks before a payment is issued via cheque.

How do I buy life insurance in Canada?

Consider: You can get an online life insurance quote and apply on your own. In some cases, it helps to talk to a person about your unique circumstances to find the right plan. Our Blue Cross Life advisors can provide advice and answer your questions. Contact an agent at +1 (866) 316-4458 from 9AM to 5PM EST, Monday to Friday.

How much life insurance coverage do you need?

Figuring out how much life insurance you need depends on your personal situation. Consider your family’s future needs, including living expenses, mortgage, debts, education costs, and any other significant expenses. Think about how much your family would need to maintain their lifestyle if you weren’t around.

You can use online calculators to get a rough estimate, but it’s also a good idea to speak with an insurance advisor to tailor your coverage to your unique needs. It’s also important to consider any existing life insurance policies you may have, such as those provided by your employer, and how they factor into your overall coverage.

Look over your policy regularly to make sure it stays aligned with your current life situation and financial goals. Life insurance isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution, so assessing your needs and updating your coverage if required can provide peace of mind and security for you and your family. Life events such as marriage, the birth of a child, buying a home, or changes in income should prompt a reassessment of your insurance needs.

What is Critical Illness Insurance?

If you are diagnosed with a covered condition, Critical Illness Insurance pays a one time lump-sum which can be used to cover lost income and any unexpected expenses (whether medical or non-medical).

The specific critical illnesses covered depend on the insurance provider, but typically include heart attack, cancer, paralysis, stroke, organ transplants, Alzheimer's, kidney failure and multiple sclerosis.

What is a covered condition?

Covered conditions are broken into two categories:

  • Fully covered condition: If you are diagnosed with any of the 27 fully covered conditions, you will be eligible to receive a lump-sum payment equal to the total amount (100%) of your coverage amount.

  • Partially covered condition: If you are diagnosed with any of the 17 partially covered conditions, you will be eligible to receive a lump-sum payment equal to a set portion (e.g., 15%, 30%) of your coverage amount. Receiving a partial payout will not reduce your total amount of coverage.

Why do I need Critical Illness Insurance?

Critical Illness Insurance is a way to remain financially protected in case of a severe illness. The tax-free lump sum can help you with expenses for out-of-pocket medication, additional at-home help, or taking time off work. Critical Illness Insurance helps you cover gaps in employer coverage and provincial health plans.

What is covered under Critical Illness Insurance?

In Canada, depending on your provider, a range of illnesses are covered. For example: heart attack, cancer, paralysis, stroke, organ transplants, Alzheimer's disease, kidney failure, and multiple sclerosis.

Blue Cross Life provides coverage for a total of 44 conditions (among the most covered in Canada). This plan includes full coverage for 27 of these conditions and partial coverage for the remaining 17 allowing you to receive financial relief when you need it most.

When does one receive the payment for Critical Illness Insurance?

Many of Blue Cross Life’s covered conditions don’t have waiting periods to qualify for a payout if you are diagnosed.

However, for some conditions there is a specified period of time that has to pass before you are eligible to receive payment.

This differs by insurance company and by the condition that is covered. Usually, cardiovascular conditions (like heart attacks) are most likely to have a waiting period.

How much is the payout for Critical Illness Insurance?

At Blue Cross Life, you can choose a coverage amount up to $1 million. A higher coverage amount means a higher monthly payment. Factors such as your health, lifestyle, and age also impact your rate.

How is Critical Illness Insurance paid out?

If you’re diagnosed with a covered condition and you submit a claim that gets approved, you’ll receive a single tax-free, lump-sum payout to help you cover any loss of income or medical expenses.

Can you cancel Critical Illness Insurance?

Yes. With Blue Cross Life, you get a full refund on any payments made if you cancel within 30 days of the date your Critical Illness Insurance policy became active.

If you cancel after this 30-day period, you will only receive a pro-rated refund of any premiums you have prepaid. You won’t be charged any cancellation fees or penalties.

Can I buy Critical Illness Insurance by itself?

At Blue Cross Life, you can buy Critical Illness Insurance as a separate policy, or you can add it to an existing Term Life Insurance policy at any time.
