What is Critical Illness Insurance?

Critical Illness (CI) Insurance in Canada is a type of insurance that covers you if you were to become diagnosed with a Critical Illness. “Critical Illness” usually refers to serious health conditions like heart attacks, strokes, or cancer. The tax-free, lump-sum payment can be put toward replacing lost income, uncovered medical expenses, or accessing specialized treatment. Critical Illness Insurance allows you to focus on your recovery, not your extra expenses.

What does Critical Illness mean?

Critical Illness refers to life-threatening and serious health conditions like heart attacks, cancer, paralysis, stroke, organ transplants, Alzheimer’s, kidney failure, and multiple sclerosis. However, what conditions are considered eligible for coverage are different from provider to provider.

For example, Blue Cross Life provides coverage for a total of 44 conditions (among the most covered in Canada). This plan includes full coverage for 27 of these conditions and partial coverage for the remaining 17, allowing you to receive financial relief when you need it most.

Anyone getting Critical Illness Insurance should carefully review their policy’s terms and conditions to understand their coverage, exclusions, and limitations.

What is the purpose of Critical Illness policy coverage?

Being diagnosed with a serious illness is a significant life event that can heavily impact you and your loved ones. The purpose of Critical Illness Insurance is to offer a financial safety if you are diagnosed. The payout can help cover loss of income, medical expenses outside of provincial coverage, and any lifestyle adjustments needed.

What illnesses are covered by Critical Illness Insurance?

While the list of covered illnesses range from provider to provider, there are several common illnesses like heart attacks, strokes, and cancers that are covered by Critical Illness Insurance.

However, it is always best to consult with an advisor and carefully read your coverage terms to know what conditions are covered with your policy.

At Blue Cross Life, you are covered for 44 conditions – among the most comprehensive coverage in Canada.

What’s the waiting period for Critical Illness Insurance?

In insurance, the waiting period is how much time must pass after a diagnosis before you can submit a claim and receive a payout.

At Blue Cross Life, the required waiting period will vary depending on a given condition. Half of the covered conditions do not require a waiting period. Most cardiovascular conditions will have a waiting period of 30 days. The remaining conditions will have waiting period criteria included within their definition. We recommend you read your policy contract or a sample policy for more details.

How much is the payout with Critical Illness Insurance?

Your payout depends on how much coverage you selected (up to $1 million) at Blue Cross Life. A higher coverage amount means a higher monthly payment. Plus, factors such as your health, lifestyle, and age also impact your rate. You receive the full coverage amount for any of the 27 fully covered conditions, and a smaller percentage of the coverage amount if it’s one of the early-stage conditions. If you receive a payout for an early-stage condition, this does not impact your payout for a fully covered condition.

How is Critical Illness Insurance paid out?

Critical Illness Insurance in Canada is typically paid out as a lump-sum, tax-free payment. It is paid to the policyholder if they are diagnosed with a covered Critical Illness and meet the conditions outlined in the insurance policy.

What are the Critical Illness Insurance rates?

Many people choose to add Critical Illness Insurance to their existing insurance coverage because of the higher likelihood for illness in one’s lifetime. Get a free, no-obligation estimate to understand what a typical Critical Illness Insurance quote in Canada could be for your desired coverage.

What happens if you don't experience a critical illness?

If you don't experience a critical illness during the term of your Critical Illness Insurance policy, you won't receive any payout. The policy is designed to provide financial support if you're diagnosed with a covered illness. If no claim is made during the policy term, the coverage  and monthly premiums end.

How much coverage can you get?

With Blue Cross Life®, you can get up to $1 million in Critical Illness Insurance coverage. You have the flexibility to apply for coverage ranging from $10,000 to $1 million, allowing you to choose the level of protection that best suits your financial needs and health concerns.

Do you have to be Canadian or live in Canada to Critical Illness Insurance?

For Blue Cross Life’s Critical Illness Insurance coverage, you must be a Canadian citizen or resident to apply. We also require you to sign your policy contract while in Canada and not overseas.

If you currently do not fit these requirements, you still have some options to be financially protected elsewhere. For your general information, there are other insurance providers outside of Blue Cross Life who will approve applications from non-Canadians, but your coverage options may be limited.
